Why I’m Running
Appropriate Board Governance.
As a corporate attorney and a veteran of non-profit boards, I understand the duties and appropriate pressure that boards should be putting on management to do better. We should build a school board culture of achieving sharper intervention outcomes, retaining our highest achieving students, and meeting strong fiscally responsible budget outcomes.
Community Connection.
As the parent of two young children, I am involved in and connected to the Goleta community on a day to day basis and experience the real world impact of our school board’s decisions. I will be a representative with ‘skin in the game,’ utilizing my experience as a parent, PTA member and business owner to inform discussions and debate on the current issues affecting GUSD and its students, as well as the myriad of other unknown issues that will affect us in the future.
Access to Top Shelf Instructional Methods.
Goleta schools should have best-in-class methods available to them, and I am a fierce advocate for cutting edge, forward-thinking instruction to all children, regardless of ability or school location. Music education is directly tied to higher achievement in both math and reading. GUSD should be offering holistic arts education (especially music education) in all schools, for all students, regardless of income level.
Technology That Serves Our Children.
Our children must be prepared for the world as it is, not the world as it was. GUSD’s technology policies should first and foremost protect our kids while strategically introducing technology with clear eyes and appropriate resources. To that end, we should seek to minimize screen time at school and in after-care programs, especially for our youngest students, while using ed tech in a targeted manner in the older grades.
Progressive Representation.
We need strong, progressive representation at the school board levels to promote equality and belonging in elementary schools and to ensure that our children are introduced to learning that includes all races, ethnicities, gender expressions, and types of families so that they can grow up to be empathetic and responsible adults. At a time when teacher support, inclusive library collections and anti-discrimination policies are under attack, we cannot be passive in our defense of these fundamental priorities. I am committed to bringing this same active, informed advocacy to every area of district governance.
